WHO fungal priority pathogens list: challenges in diagnosis and management
3 November 2025 @ 11.00 - 12.30 CET*
This joint ISAC / ESCMID webinar explores the critical challenges posed by fungal infections, as highlighted in the WHO Fungal Priority Pathogen List. It features expert insights into the global burden and clinical impact of fungal pathogens. Prof. Cornelia Lass-Flörl provides an overview of the priority pathogens identified by WHO, while Prof. Sevtap Arikan Akdagli discusses the growing threat of azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus in both clinical and environmental settings, emphasising the need for effective screening and containment strategies. Prof. Anuradha Chowdhary addresses the emergence and spread of antifungal resistance in Candida species, underscoring the urgent need for improved diagnostics and management approaches.

SPEAKER BIOS
Prof. Cornelia Lass-Flörl is Director of the Institute of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck. A specialist in medical microbiology, she is a Fellow of several leading societies including ESCMID and IDSA. Her research focuses on fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, antifungal susceptibility testing and host-pathogen interactions. She has authored numerous publications and was listed among Clarivate’s highly cited researchers in 2020, 2022, and 2023. She has held leadership roles in EFISG, ECMM and EUCAST.
Prof. Sevtap Arikan-Akdagli is Director of the Mycology Laboratory at Hacettepe University Medical School, Ankara. She completed her MD and specialist training there, with a research fellowship at the University of Texas. She serves as Secretary of ESCMID’s EFISG, is a member of EUCAST’s AFST subcommittee, and a founding member of the Turkish Society of Medical Mycology. She sits on ESCMID Global and TIMM programme committees and is an editor and reviewer for leading journals. Her research focuses on antifungal drugs, resistance, susceptibility testing and diagnosis of invasive fungal infections.
Prof. Anuradha Chowdhary is Professor of Medical Mycology at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, and Secretary General of ISAC. Her research focuses on antifungal resistance, emerging fungal pathogens and molecular epidemiology, with key contributions on Candida auris, Cryptococcus, and azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and serves on the ESCMID Global Scientific Programme Committee. Prof. Chowdhary is a Fellow of several prestigious organisations and an internationally recognised expert in fungal infections.
