Organised by the ESCMID Study Group for Infections in Critically Ill Patients (ESGCIP) /
ISAC Working Group on Infections in the ICU and Sepsis
This joint webinar will explore key challenges in managing multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections in critically ill patients. Topics include antimicrobial stewardship in both high- and low- antimicrobial resistance settings, optimisation of antimicrobial pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics using therapeutic drug monitoring, continuous infusion and nebulised antibiotics, and effective infection prevention and control strategies for MDR pathogens.
|
Programme
- Implementation of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in high AMR prevalence settings
Matteo Bassetti (Italy)
- Implementation of AMS in low AMR prevalence settings
Christian Eckmann (Germany)
- Optimisation of antimicrobial PK/PD in MDR infections (Therapeutic drug monitoring [TDM], continuous infusion, nebulised antibiotics)
Sonia Luque (Spain)
- Infection prevention and control strategies for MDR pathogens
Emine Alp Mese (Turkiye):
Moderators:
Dr Despoina Koulenti, Secretary of ISAC's Working Group on Infections in the ICU and Sepsis, King's College Hospital, UK
Dr Claire Roger, Nimes University Hospital, France.

Speakers
Matteo Bassetti is Head of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at Policlinico San Martino and Full Professor at the University of Genoa. He trained in Genoa and completed an Infectious Diseases fellowship at Yale. He is President of Italian Society of Anti-infective Therapy (SITA), serves on Italy’s national AMR committee (PNCAR) and is Secretary of ESGCIP. He sits on the councils of the Immunocompromised Host Society (ICHS) and the International Sepsis Forum. Author of over 650 papers (H-index 67), he is widely recognised for his work on antimicrobial therapy, resistance and infections in immunocompromised and critically ill patients.
Christian Eckmann is Head of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery and ABS Team Lead at Klinikum Hannoversch-Münden, and Professor of Clinical Research in Surgical Infections at Lübeck University. A certified Antibiotic Stewardship expert, he is an ISAC fellow and leads the intra-abdominal infections section of Germany’s national antimicrobial-treatment guidelines. He serves on the Paul-Ehrlich Society for Chemotherapy (PEG) Executive Committee and ESCMID’s ESGCIP study group. His research focuses on complicated intra-abdominal and skin/soft‑tissue infections, resistant pathogens, and health-economics strategies. He has published over 150 papers and contributes to multiple national and international antimicrobial guidelines.
Sònia Luque Pardos is a clinical pharmacist at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona and a specialist in antimicrobial PK/PD, particularly for MDR Gram-negative infections. Her research focuses on optimising new β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitors to maximise efficacy and limit resistance. She is part of Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobials Research Group (IPAR) of the Institut Hospital del Mar d'Investigacions Mèdiques (IMIM), the Spanish Network for Research in Infectious Diseases (REIPI), and serves on the EPASG Executive Committee and chairs Sociedad Española de Farmacia Hospitalaria's (SEFH) Infectious Diseases Group. She has completed postdoctoral fellowships in Liverpool and Rotterdam, published over 60 papers, and holds a national clinical‑research fellowship in PK/PD.
Emine Alp is Professor of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University and a leading expert in infection prevention and control in Türkiye. She serves as EUCIC Research Manager and Training Programme Coordinator, Education Officer for ESGNI, and President of the Turkish Hospital Infections and Control Society. She chairs the national Sepsis Study Group of EKMUD and is an External Expert for the ECDC. Her work spans hospital infections, sepsis, and antimicrobial stewardship, with major contributions to national and international training and guideline development.
