Overview

Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) is now under the auspices of International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ISAC).

Stuart Levy’s prophetic warnings (made during an era of plentiful antibiotics) about antibiotic overuse and the emergence of resistance have come to full fruition. He co-founded and led APUA for 37 years: it was the first organisation to address antibiotic preservation and continues to provide a strong voice in the field despite the subsequent emergence of many other organisations and groups addressing a topic which has become a specialty in its own right; that of “antibiotic stewardship”. Towards the end of last year, Stuart Levy’s retirement from APUA and Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston was announced. He was a trailblazer and, in APUA, leaves a very strong legacy.

Stuart’s retirement was an opportunity for the APUA Board to review its leadership and governance and it took the opportunity to seek a partner organisation with which to synergise. This led to the merger of APUA with the International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ISAC), effective from February 2019.

In the sections that follow, you can view APUA's activities since its merger with ISAC. For more on APUA and its history, please visit www.APUA.org

Antibiotic cards

The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) is proud to announce the launch of the third batch of ‘Antibiotic cards’ for a further five antibiotics currently in use. The latest cards are: Cefepime, Ceftazidime-Avibactam, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Piperacillin-Tazobactam

This project aims to provide a summary of the main characteristics of selected antibiotics. These antibiotic cards have been primarily designed to assist the prescribers in the selection of the most appropriate antibiotic, with optimal dosages, and to provide guidance to those who take care of patients who receive antibiotics. These antibiotic cards have been produced by members of the APUA board and colleagues, with no support from the pharmaceutical industry, and are available free of charge. They share a common design, with a special focus on their antimicrobial spectrum, main indications, dosing, and adverse events. We hope that you will find them useful and that these antibiotic cards will contribute to better use of antibiotics worldwide, the primary goal of APUA.

Vietnamese translations of five cards for antibiotics commonly used in Vietnam are also available - download now.
