Paul Newton is an infectious disease doctor and Professor of Tropical Medicine in the Centre for Tropical Medicine & Global Health, Oxford University. He founded with Lao colleagues the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU) within Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Lao PDR and was director 1999-2019. They built together a sustainable team of Lao researchers, investigating the epidemiology, optimal diagnostic techniques and treatments for Asian infectious diseases.
They developed a multidisciplinary program of medicine quality research, to answer key questions on the epidemiology, impact and detection of substandard and falsified medical products, that is now based in Oxford. This included alerting to the public health dangers of poor quality medicines, conducting innovative forensic analysis to understand falsified medicine origins, evaluating promising portable devices for empowering drug inspectors, developed the first consensus guidelines on the conduct and reporting of medicine quality surveys, organised the first international conference and yearly short courses on Medicine Quality & Public Health and built multinational capacity for research to inform policy on prevention, detection and response to substandard and falsified medical products.
Professor Mike Sharland is a leading global expert in antibiotic use and policy. He is an advisor to the WHO to optimal antibiotic use including as a member of the Expert Committee on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines. Mike is the Chair of the Antibiotic Working Group of the EML which developed the Access/Watch/Reserve (AWaRe) system for antibiotics and the WHO AWaRe Book. He leads the Wellcome Trust funded ADILA project developing novel risk adjusted models of optimal AWaRe antibiotic use. He leads multiple global trials on improving antibiotic use in children. Mike is the lead clinical advisor for the neonatal and paediatric programme of GARDP and AMR lead of the Penta Foundation. He Chaired the Department of Health’s National Expert Advisory Committee on AMR from 2011 to 2018.
